The Swithland Wood Recordings

An artist-led collaborative project to produce new music and visuals inspired by field recordings of birdsong from Swithland Woods in Leicestershire, funded by Arts Council England.

Artist, Lucy Stevens worked with Rishii Chowdhury (tabla) and Roopa Panesar (sitar) to produce a musical response to field recordings of 12 native birds taken from Swithland Woods that could demonstrate the pitch, repetition and duration of bird vocalisation. Both Lucy and Rishii received mentoring and training from artist Lyndall Phelps, bird expert and field recordist Geoff Sample, and musician Roopa Panesar. The project culminated in a 12 inch vinyl EP, with a digitally illustrated printed sleeve and lyric book that was showcased at the ‘Passion2print’ exhibition at LCB Depot in 2016.

Don’t worry If you didn’t get to see and hear it live, you can listen back here via Soundcloud. I find you can hear more detail if you listen through headphones. Purchase a digital copy of The Swithland Wood Recordings for £6.

“Lucy’s project is great because it will bring together experts from different fields to influence the creation of artworks which invite the audience to look at the natural world around us in a different way.”
